Anthony Joshua Involved in a Fatal Car Crash in Nigeria
Anthony Joshua, the British former world heavyweight boxing champion, was involved in a serious car crash in Nigeria on December 29, 2025, which resulted in two fatalities and left him with minor injuries. The collision occurred on the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway, one of the country’s busiest highways, near Makun in Ogun State.

Joshua, 36, was traveling as a passenger in a Lexus SUV when the vehicle was involved in a crash on the expressway shortly before 11 a.m. local time. According to Nigerian police and the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), the SUV was suspected of traveling above the speed limit and lost control during an overtaking maneuver, causing it to collide with a stationary truck parked by the roadside.
Eyewitness video and images posted on social media showed Joshua being helped out of the wrecked SUV, wincing in pain, and later taken to a hospital by emergency responders.

Officials confirmed that Joshua sustained only minor injuries. He was conscious, taken to hospital for evaluation and treatment, and noted to be in a stable condition. Nigerian authorities, including the governments of Ogun and Lagos states, stated that he did not require emergency interventions at this time, although he would remain under observation.

Tragically, two people in the vehicle died at the scene. Later reporting identified the deceased as Sina Ghami and Latif “Latz” Ayodele, both members of Joshua’s team — Ghami as his strength and conditioning coach and Ayodele as his trainer. Police confirmed that the bodies of the deceased were taken to a morgue in Sagamu for further formalities. The other passengers in the vehicle included individuals who survived with no reported serious injuries, though one was also treated for injuries.

Authorities in Ogun State have launched an investigation into the crash to determine the precise cause and contributing factors. Preliminary findings cited speeding and unsafe overtaking as key elements in the collision. In the aftermath, Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu reportedly contacted Joshua to offer his condolences and support, while friends and colleagues across the sport have expressed grief for the loss of Ghami and Ayodele and relief that Joshua survived.
